I found this story very disconcerting - well written, very thought provoking. Kate Wilhelm, Michael Moorcock, Robert Silverberg, and John Brunner demonstrate too with their stories why they remain among the most popular science fiction writers of all time. Science fiction is about how people will respond to changing technology, but I just had a hard time believing that people would actually use the kind of technology described here even if it were available. This venerable collection of short stories brings together award winning authors and masters of the field such as Robert Reed, Alastair Reynolds, Damien Broderick, Carrie Vaughn, Ian R. It is some sort of twisted coming of age novel mixed with a heavy dose of satire and cyberpunk. I shall revise this review if I come to any further insights about this story, or if the other stories strike me in any way. Another interesting collection, if perhaps not as strong as the first one I read in this series. Greg Egan had two stories in this collection. A good, not great collection of sci-fi short stories from the early 90's. Not quite so cutting edge now, but still pretty good.

It is some sort of twisted coming of age novel mixed with a heavy dose of satire and cyberpunk. Dozois picks fiction that deserves to be better known to a wide audience. Wish for something, you just might get it. I loved it, but I'm still not sure what to think of it. The Cairene Purse - Michael Moorcock. This story is well written, very intelligent, a fun read, but I don't get the ending. Bottom line, it is a most excellent story, but just be warned that it also includes bestiality oriented pornographic moments. It seems that many stories have covered the idea of transferring oneself into a computer or network intelligence, but this one is thoughtful and better than most I think.

One of Sterling's best early stories, 5 stars. Everybody in this future world is highly modified, or a Story 1, Mr Boy, is all I have read so far. Mostly this is a good, quite clever and quite funny story, but once again, the ending the last five pages are a complete failure. But, I didn't really enjoy it. I'm not sure what the overall point of it is yet, but I'm sure there is a deeper meaning because of all the metaphor and symbolism. The First Since Ancient Persia - John Brunner.

In a changing world, nothing is quite what it seems. That said, this is a great collection, with the possible exception of Daffyd ab Hughes rather dubious contribution Graphic bestiality? An odd story, about conquerors. Walking the Moons - Jonathan Lethem. What mysteries belie the truths we once held to be self evident? By far my favorite two were 'The Shobies Story' - Ursula LeGuin and 'The Hemingway Hoax' - Joe Haldeman. My favorite short story ever- love the bears, and the grandma, a wonderful, deep, great story.

Everybody in this future world is highly modified, or at least the people that can afford it. We experience several stories within stories as we follow Elam in various incarnations and his death within those. Won the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, Sturgeon and other awards. It is a very serious warning. A well written story about the building a tower to God, How long would it be? But the more I read, the more I warmed up to it. Ships are propelled by very efficient fusion engines - but for some reason it is not possible to use this incredible source of power for desalinisation of sea water. I think this story had a bigger impact on me nearly 20 years ago when I first read it.

Its interesting to see how things such as the internet and other communication devices are portrayed her - in 1990 these things were on the horizon, but no idea about just how integral this is in a future society. The traveling is just as interesting as getting to the top. It explores a person who has been stunted annually for the last 13 years to remain 12, so now he is technically 25.
